Welcome to PWT's Lighting Section

========================================

Marty's note: There are LED lights and there are LED lights. (To make the understatement of the year)

I'll tell you right now, I am seriously twitchy about Chinese products these days,
they are putting out so much crap it just isn't funny and, in my book, should be illegal.
However, there are some reputable suppliers of product who are have goods made by
reputable Chinese companies who are putting out a good product. An associate of mine,
who is having boats built in China, said to me, "It is okay having stuff made in China 'if'
you have a permanent supervisor in place, if you don't, you get 'cheap'".

When I first looked at these flash lights and head lights, I said, I dunno, Chinese,
but, these are not cheap Chinese crap. They are a well thought out, well made
product that is backed by a lifetime warranty to the original owner.

Take a look at these.
Not cheap, if you want cheap, go to Coles and
buy a $9.95 flash light, but if you want something
that works and will go the distance
keep looking - right here.

This little baby is the HP5.
Check out the specs on this! I have been using one of these around here and it is quite a dazzler. At 90 grams and 120mm long, it will fit in your shirt pocket. It comes with a smart black case that can be clipped on to your belt with the double security of velco and a press stud fastening to make sure it stays there when working the foredeck or mucking around on the tractor. A light range of over 75 metres, two light intensities, the sliding bezel gives a fully adjustable beam for spot light or wide angle. It is hard to believe that all this light comes from a single LED packed into a robust aluminium case that is water resistant. And all backed by a lifetime guarantee against defects in materials and workmanship.

  • Light output: High - 121 lumens; Low - 41 lumens
  • Runtime: High - 4 hours 30 minutes; Low - 6 hours
  • Beam distance: High power -78 meters.
  • Low power - 46 meters
  • Aluminum casing; Rubber rear switch
  • Impact and water resistant
  • 90 grams (including battery)
  • 120mm length
  • Diameter: Body - 21mm Bezel - 28mm.
HP5
Compact, light weight and powerful.

And this bigger baby is the HP7.
I have also been using one of these around here and it is something else. At 210 grams and 141mm long, it will fit in your trowser back or side pocket. It sits comfortably in your hand but also comes with a smart black case that can be clipped on to your belt with velco and press stud fastening. A light range of over 190 metres, two light intensities, adjustable beam for spot light or wide angle. This light is truly a little spotlight. Looking for mooring buoy on a dark night, looking for that possom in the tree? Throw away that big 12 volt spotlight, take this out of your pocket. Even harder believe that all this light comes from a single LED packed into a robust aluminium case that is water resistant. And, again, all backed by a lifetime guarantee against defects in materials and workmanship.

  • Light output: High - 251 lumens; Low - 58 lumens
  • Runtime: High - 5 hours 45 minutes; Low - 10 hours
  • Beam distance: High power - 196 meters
  • Low power - 66 meters
  • Aluminum casing; Rubber rear switch
  • High and low output modes
  • Impact and water resistant
  • 210 grams (including batteries)
  • 141 mm length
  • Diameter: Body - 32 mm. Bezel - 38 mm.

This HL3 is the baby of the
Headlight family
.
I have also been using one of these around here - as I do to test things out. At 125 grams it isn't going to give you a headache and the separate battery back sits comfortably at the back of your head. With a light range of over 40 metres, it gives more than enough for working around on deck at night, checking sail trim, reading while sailing or camping, or generally wandering around the bush. Three LED's that have no intensity or beam adjustment make this an economical and extremely useful light that is easy to carry in your pocket or kit bag. Needless to say, that it is water resistant and all backed by a lifetime guarantee against defects in materials and workmanship.

  • 60 lumen light output
  • 12 hour 30 minute runtime
  • 43 meter
  • Max Beam™ Multi-Reflector System; 3 High intensity LEDs
  • Metal & plastic casing
  • Impact and water resistant
  • Hinged attachment to position beam
  • Adjustable elastic straps
  • 125 grams (including batteries)
  • 3 X AAA batteries (included)

HL3 for the top.
It all looks a bit untidy from this angle but, in
reality, it isn't, it's just my photography.

HL3 side view.
The small button under the light is the on/off switch.
Note the light can swivel down for reading, bushwalking or
doing up that shackle. Ample light for most peoples needs.

And then there's the HL7.
The big Daddy of the Headlight family

Being in the bush and being a bit of a nature freak, this gets a bit of use around here. I am in love with this light. Not as powerful as the HP7 flashlight but with the light range it has, for most general purposes, you'd hardly notice the difference. At 130 grams, only a whisker heavier than the HL3 with the same system of separate battery pack sitting comfortably at the back of your head. Full adjustment between spot light or wide angle and, with a light range of over 100 metres, it gives stacks of light for finding that mooring buoy on a dark night or looking for that possom in the tree, with the added advantage over a flashlight of leaving your hands free. Beam intensity is completely adjustable from quite dim to full blinding power so you can choose whether or not to destroy the night vision of the crew on the boat trying to overtake you in that night race. Or, on the lowest power, you have enough light to comfortably find your way around. Light can be angled down for cooking, bushwalking, reading etc. All this light given by a single LED. "It's the lens wot does it".

  • Light output: High - 196 lumens; Low - 3 lumens
  • Runtime: High power - 5 hours 45 minutes.
  • Low power - 76 hours 30 minutes
  • Beam distance: High power - 109 meters.
  • Low power - 17 meters
  • 3 X AAA batteries (included)
  • Z Cord in headband for added durability
  • Adjustable elastic straps
  • Easy to operate front power switch
  • Impact and water resistant
  • 130 grams (including batteries)
  • This comes with a small closable bag that can be atached to a belt but I've had a problem actually getting it to fit in comfortably. maybe there's a bit of a method to it.

HL7 on low power.
On/off switch works easily and does the high/low power adjuster.

HL7 on high power.
This photo - taken in daylight - does not do justice to the power of this light. Beam adjustment is easy with good grip on the bezel.

More coming.
Just hang in there.

Okay, here's the "Turbo" and we're getting a bit more into the novel but "useful" sector.
At just 50 mm long and 20 mm diameter, this fits unobtrusively in your pocket, purse, glove box, mouth, (while you fumble around looking for your keys or changing that flat tyre in the middle of the night) where ever it may be needed. It gives a useful light, (unlike some of the keyring torches). What is also good about this product is that it is water resistant to being submersible and you can recharge it in your cigarette lighter socket. Note: I have found that, despite the fact it comes with an adapter to make it suit different types of socket, it does not sit comfortably in the Sutars style socket commonly found on boats - it is loose, rattles around, and cannot recharge properly. However, in my standard car socket, it's fine. But, in my car I have a 4 CL plug distributor and it tries to work in it but doesn't really cut it. While this item only carries a 90 day warranty, it does appear to be well made and, therefore, should last a long time. All in all, a practical lighting solution for casual use. A nice little gift for someone or a useful light for the car, pocket, purse or boat. Can't go too far astray for $20.00.
  • High power 0.5 watt LED bulb (35+ lumens)
  • colorful anodized aluminum body
  • 180+ minutes of light per charge
  • water resistant / submersible
  • red glow ‘charging’ indicator
  • rechargeable Ni - MH battery
  • shines 50 meter / 150 feet
  • 90 day warranty

A handy and compact light. Shown with socket adapter fitted.

Gives out a useful light. Shown with socket adapter removed.

"Turbo" does not sit well in this Sutars socket with or without adapter.
